I love using essential oils in the kitchen! Essential oils can be a great flavoring for food (did you know that the food industry uses them regularly?) I wanted to share with you all a fun recipe that I developed using essential oils.
Heart Shaped Blueberry Scones with Orange Essential Oil
I discovered this recipe combination as an accident actually. I wanted to make blueberry scones for my family for breakfast one morning but I found that we did not have any orange rind to make zest! This is an important flavor in the recipe and then I remembered that I had orange essential oil in my soft shell essential oil case. It was a perfect addition to the recipe! My whole family loved it!
With this recipe it is important to note that you can use a heart shaped cookie cutter to create your hearts for more uniform shaped and sized scones or you can shape them into hearts by hand for a more rustic and homemade flare to the baked good.
As you can see from the pictures we chose to shape this batch by hand. My soft shell essential oil case is photobombing…
They were delicious! I made these with my kids and we had a blast. On a side note: when in the kitchen with children be sure to keep your oils in a secure case (I love my soft shell essential oils case for this very reason) to protect against the little glass bottles falling and breaking.
2 cups all-purpose flour
½ cup sugar
1 tablespoon baking powder
½ teaspoon salt
5 drops of Wild Orange Essential Oil
½ cup cold unsalted butter, shredded with a cheese shredder
1 large egg
½ cup cold heavy cream
1 cup blueberries, fresh and picked over
a couple of tablespoons of heavy cream for brushing on the tops
Raw sugar for sprinkling the tops
Preheat oven to 400 degrees. Combine wet ingredients in a bowl, combine dry ingredients in another bowl. Pour the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients and mix a couple of times, then add the blueberries and mix carefully so as not to break many of them. Flour a cutting surface. Form the dough into a ball and put it onto the floured cutting surface. Form into hearts or a round and cut triangles in 8ths of the whole. Put wax paper, parchment paper or a silicone baking mat (you can find one on Amazon here) on your baking sheet then transfer the scones onto the baking sheet. Brush on a bit of heavy cream and sprinkle some Raw sugar on each scone.
Bake for 18 to 20 minutes or until lightly golden. Remove and cool. Enjoy! 🙂
